Robert Porter, M.D., FACP, will be recognized with the 2013 Bal Jeffrey Award on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 at the Ramada Inn Hotel and Convention Center.
Dr. Porter is credited with starting lifesaving kidney dialysis therapy in Topeka and the surrounding area in 1974. Under his leadership, dialysis services were expanded to six communities in northeast Kansas and a home dialysis program was initiated. During his career, he has provided medical and dialysis care to thousands of local families.
In addition to his local contributions, Dr. Porter has participated in medical mission trips to southeast Asia and Africa.
Dialysis is a very technical procedure, but his colleagues and nominators share that he always reminds them of the personal connection they have with the patients. Staff is reminded to be at the chair beside the patient and not at the nursing station.
